My daughter is 14. She has exercise induced asthema. The doctor put her on Singulair, however, she's starting PE at school tomorrow and I'm concerned about whether this medication is going to help her or not. She couldn't make the basketball team this year because of her asthema. One lap around the field running and she starts having breathing problems and heart palpatations. This medication is new for her. She has been on it for 5 days. I don't know how long it takes to work but I know she has to start running tomorrow in her PE class. I did speak to her teacher, so he's aware but that doesn't always mean anything. If you have this problem and use this medication can you please share how it's worked or not worked for you? Thank you!
she did PE and had an attack, it was less than her others. She stopped quicker when she felt it coming on though. I think that has to help. Today she's going to try again. Does this medication take time to build up?

singular is used for long term prevention of asthma. it reduces the swelling and inflammation that tends to close up the airway, and relaxes the walls of the bronchial tubes, expanding the airways, and permitting moreair to pass through, BUT it wont stop, an acute asthma attack. for that u need a fast acting, orally inhaled airway opener such as, alupent or proventil. singular ISNT a complete replacement for such drugs. so if ur daughters asthma gets worse after exercise, she will, need to continue using a short acting inhaled airway opener, to prevent and relieve attacks. i hope this helps . ill be praying for her. god bless

My mother due to the falling out between my sister and brother as well as other family problems which she at times is reluctant even to discuss with me, is suffering from serious depression. Even though I have taken her to various psychiatrists, psychologists and even nerves specialists, non seem to be improving her situation. She sinks further into depression when the meds taken for depression affect her nerves problem.She is now incapable of even being by herself while the rest of the household sleeps. She has also become increasingly obsessive about household chores.She is very afraid for loved one's safety and of simple tasks such as going to a bank etc.I would like to know how I can help her at home, as well as if there know if there is any other medical solution i can seek.

I don't know what you mean by “nerves” problem. There is a new anti-depressant just approved called Emsam that works by a different mechanism than other commonly prescribed anti-depressants. And it is also prescribed for some neurological conditions like Parkinson's under the name Eldepryl. In other words, for certain types of neurological problems this might have a slightly positive effect rather than a negative one (but I don't what kind of problem she has so it's hard to know). This is something you'd have to go over with the doctors. The drug is called Emsam, generic name selegiline. It is considered a neuroprotectant, unlike other anti-depressants. Many doctors don't know much at all about this drug, but a neurologist should.
Interestingly, this drug also lowers levels of oxidative stress in the brain and may improve cognitive dysfunction in the aged (may make for clearer thinking). It has also been shown to repeatedly extend lifespan in various types of animals, including different types of rodents and dogs. It's possible that this is a healthier drug than other anti-depressants.
It may or may not be a candidate for your mother to try, depending on her exact problems.

I love animals but unfortunately i have developed this allergy to cats and dogs. I sneeze alot and my throat becomes itchy and my breathing becomes a little laboured. Has anyone had success with natural remedies or even a allergist?

You can try claritin, which is non drowsy. It was once a prescription medication, but a few years ago they changed to an over the counter(OTC) medication. You can also try Sudafed as needed to relieve congestion.
Also, I have allergies to dogs and cats, and I own 2 dogs. I use zyrtec and allegra. I also use nasocort and elestat (antihistamine eyedrop). If the claritin doesn't work for your, I suggest you see a doctor to get a script for zyrtec.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) causes dandruff on the scalp and causes inflamed, red flaky patches of dry skin on the face. I tried topical steroids on my face but it made my condition worse. Are there any other treatments for SD on the face? Supposedly SD is caused by the body's overreaction to yeast that normally live on the skin. This overreaction causes the inflammation and dryness. It is unknown why some people get SD but not others. I am using shampoos like Head and Shoulders for my scalp but don't know what to use on my face.

I have suffered with this problem since my early twenties. I have tried every OTC product you can imagine without much success. About 2 years ago I finally decided to try a dermatologist again. He prescribed a newer medication called Elidel, it's a topical cream that I put on once a day on affected areas (usually after I take a shower). This is about the only thing I have found that works well. It doesn't completely get rid of it, but it stops the itching and the redness…and I don't get asked if I have a sunburn on my face all the time….it has been a God send.

My wife just received her second epidural steroid injection in her back. She has a herniated disk in her lower back. Curious as to how long it usually takes for the medicine to begin taking effect. Thanks in advance for any info.

In most epidural steroid injections a combination of local anesthetic (numbing medication, comparable to “novocaine”) and a steroid is used. Some steroids like methylprednisolone (Solu-Medrol) are in crystalline form and take some time to dissolve. It also takes the nerve a couple of days to respond by decreasing inflammation and swelling.
If your wife gets only relief for a day or just a couple of days it means that the steroid is not helping and the temporary pain relief is just from the numbing medication.
If the steroid helps, it takes anywhere from 2-6 days to kick in. If there is no relief after 2-3 injections discuss other treatment options. Often epidural steroid injections given as transforaminal (coming in a little from the side versus midline) give much better relief.

I take 200 mg Celebrex every day for arthritis. My RN friend says she takes Mobic 15 mg and it is the only arthritis medicine her hospital prescribes since it is safer and works better than Celebrex. I want to know why it is safer and what, if any, are the side effects?

About celebrex: It is true that it is slightly better for the stomach (GI tract in general) and it does not have the detrimental side effects (increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality) that vioxx and bextra had.
Mobic is a less specific COX-2 inhibitor and has never been shown to be any better than celebrex.
As mobic is not generic it is as expensive as celebrex.
If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to celebrex, I would recommend Etodolac as it is generic and overall better tolerated than ibuprofen or naprosyn.
From a personal standpoint: my mother tolerated celebrex ok but had severe stomach problems with mobic. As always YMMV.
