Is dryness a common side effect of all birth controls?… by S

July 31, 2008 · Filed Under vagifem · Comment

I stopped taking the Nuvaring because of dryness and a lack of sex drive, but I heard that all birth controls cause dryness. Is this true of birth controls in general?
I've tried lube, but haven't found a good one yet. It just doesn't feel right.

Best Answer:

I have experienced vaginal dryness on Microgynon 20 ED and also currently on Levlen ED and so my gyno prescribed Vagifem for me which has helped heaps.

For more information on Vagifem, go to: http://www.vagifem.com/

I would recommend that if lubrication does not help for you that you consult with your doctor/gyno for further evaluation.

Good luck :)

What is the best way to control poison oak? And how long does it last?… by nickvet

July 29, 2008 · Filed Under vistaril · Comment

I have brief patches of poison oak on my arms. 3 to be exact. how long will they be there and can i keep them from spreading? i already put on poison oak stuff from a bottle and i have bandaged up the infected area.

Best Answer:

Poison ivy and poison oak will persist for the same length of time or without medication. If secondary bacterial infection occurs, healing will be delayed; hence, scratching is not helpful. Poison ivy is not contagious. It can't be spread once the oil has been either absorbed by the skin or removed. If the lesions are too extensive to be easily treated, if home treatment is ineffective, or if the itching is so severe that it can't be tolerated, a call to the doctor may be necessary. The itching may be treated with either an antihistamine ( Benadryl or Vistaril, for example) or acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. The antihistamines may cause drowsiness and interfere with sleep.The resulting rash begins after a delay of 12 to 48 hours and persist for about two weeks. And good luck.

i wear contacts and i get that grainy feeling in my eyes sometimes when wearing them, what do i do?… by SouthCali4Life

July 29, 2008 · Filed Under alocril · Comment

when my eyes start feeling like they're drying up too much, i have to take off my contacts and my eyes hurt badly with a feeling like their are many grains of sand in them and the grainy feeling lasts for several several minutes most of the time. eye drops don't solve the problem…after about 30 minutes to an hour, i can usually put my contacts back in, but sometimes, the problem relapses quickly. anyone know what this can be?

Best Answer:

I went to my eye doctor because I had the same thing, like I had hairspray in my eyes. He told me I'm allergic to conacts and the veins squeeze my cornea's. He prescribed drops called Alocril. They burn your eyes for a few seconds, but now I can wear contacts without the pain.

Is there a way to reduce or stop fluid gathering in the feet due to bone and liver cancer?… by Marie

July 29, 2008 · Filed Under aldactone · Comment

My grandmother has cancer that has spread to her liver. Her lungs are gathering fluid already, but recently her feet have begun to gather fluid. Is there something we can do to reduce or stop the fluid build-up in her feet?

Best Answer:

She should elevate her feet as much as possible, even slightly, as this should help reduce the edema in her legs and feet.

Ask her doctor if he thinks her edema would respond to diuretics (water tablets).

For the fluid in her lungs (pulmonary edema), treatments include:

Aldactone;
Bumex;
Dyazide;
Lasix;
Maxzide; and
Hydrodiuril.

The product branded as Lasix (furosemide) is also available in injection form, as is Bumex.

Best wishes to you and your grandmother.

Take care.

What are some of the side effects of Lamivudine?… by Jack B, sinistral *CAF

July 29, 2008 · Filed Under combivir · Comment

I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone who is taking, or has taken, the drug. Thank you for your answers.

Best Answer:

I found this on-line. Good luck, hope its not for you. If it is for you, may you be at peace with your existential self.

Lamivudine should not be taken together with Combivir, a medication that contains a combination of lamivudine and zidovudine.

Lamivudine may cause lactic acidosis (the build up of lactic acid in the body). Lactic acidosis symptoms can start slowly and gradually get worse. Symptoms include unusual muscle pain and weakness, trouble breathing, fast or uneven heart rate, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and numbness or cold feeling in your arms or legs. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these symptoms, even if they are only mild. Early signs of lactic acidosis generally get worse over time and this condition can be fatal.

Lamivudine can also cause severe or life-threatening effects on your liver or pancreas. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these symptoms while taking lamivudine: severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, fast heart rate, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, low fever, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Before taking lamivudine, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, a history of pancreatitis, or if you have used a medicine similar to lamivudine in the past, such as abacavir (Ziagen), didanosine (Videx), stavudine (Zerit), tenofovir (Viread), zalcitabine (Hivid), or zidovudine (Retrovir).

How do I get zinc dissolved in hydrochloric acid out of solution?… by Grady Wate

July 28, 2008 · Filed Under zinc · Comment

I put a penny in hydrochloric acid. The copper plating floated to the top after all the zinc was in solution. I want the zinc. How do I get it out of solution?

Best Answer:

The zinc will be present as Zn2+ ions. Sodium hydroxide will not reduce the zinc back to zinc metal. Sodium hydroxide will precipitate the zinc as Zn(OH)2, but too much will redissolve it as Na2ZnO2 or Na2Zn(OH)4. I would suggest adding sodium carbonate instead to precipitate the zinc as zinc carbonate. Be sure to skim off the copper before precipitating.

This will give you a pure zinc salt. Getting this back to zinc metal is difficult - it can be smelted with carbon, but at the temperatures required, the zinc often boils off or burns off as ZnO. If you just want to get metallic zinc out of a penny, the best way is to melt it over an alcohol lamp or gas flame. The zinc innards will melt before the copper, and poking the copper skin with a screwdriver (or other tool) will release the molten zinc.

What medication is used to treat genital warts to prevent from having outbreaks?… by Jen

July 28, 2008 · Filed Under condylox · Comment

Hi I saw an answer to a question and the lady said that there is medication you can use to keep from getting an outbreak. I get them all the time right before I get my period for about a day or two and it is very uncomfortable sometimes I want to cry. What is the name of this medication…thank you. As soon as I get an answer I am calling my doc and asking them to prescribe it for me they know I have gential warts.

Best Answer:

see your doctor, who may prescribe a medicine for you to apply to the warts or may administer one of a number of treatments himself or herself. Medicines that can be applied include
podophyllin trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and

Condylox, which kill the wart tissue, or

Aldara, a cream that stimulates your immune system to fight the virus.

Allergic Rhinitis and Nasacort?… by andrey_from_

July 28, 2008 · Filed Under patanase · Comment

Hello!
Does anyone know if Nasacort can help clear up mucus in a throat? One of my nostrils is not breathing as well. My doctor prescribed me some spray called “Patanase” but it's not covered by my insurance. Do you think Nasacort can help?

Thank you!

Best Answer:

Nasacort may help. Keep in mind that these two medications operate in two very different ways. Nasacort is a steroid, which can cause a host of problems, including increased nasal bleeding and headaches.

Patanase was recently approved by the FDA as part of the third generation of antihistamines, called H1 receptor antagonists.

If you combine over-the-counter generic Claratin or Zyrtec with Nasacort, you may acheive similar relief as Patanase.

What are some ways to improve my constant sinus problems/headaches?… by leeza

July 27, 2008 · Filed Under veramyst · Comment

It feels like I have cold symptoms every morning. My nose is a mess all the time. Since we moved, it seems like I'm always sick. Do you think its from too much dust? What about an air purifier or something? Any other methods?

Thank you for answering!

Best Answer:

I have been dealing with the same problem off and on since January. The thing that helps me the most is using the netti pot. I use it everyday and it has made a big difference. You can buy one online, Walgreens, Whole Foods, etc. My doctor just gave me a prescription for a nasal spray called Veramyst which she said her patients have been raving about, but I didn't get it filled b/c it was $60 with insurance! She also suggested Alavert (a spray as well) which you don't need a prescription for. Claritin helps too. Good luck and feel better!
