How long can a healthy person be kept sedated? Can you keep a person sedated for 6 months or more?… by Yousif (Joe)
I ask this question because I was wondering if astronauts can do this for long missions… I don't mean like stop a person from growing… but keeping a person sedated to keep them from going insane during the trip - like a 6-12 month Mars mission…
Is it possible to keep the person asleep and have them feed off of an IV for that long?
Best Answer:
No. Normal IV's don't have nearly enough nutrients, and TPN (total parenteral nutrition) is too complicated. Tube-feedings would be possible but would still leave the need for care-takers. And that leaves out other considerations, such as the risk of thromboembolic disease and skin breakdown, among others.

by takeing a Tekturna for high blood pressure does it leave abittterness in your mouth?… by nettedeloiseva
I take this medciton for high blood pressure and II want to, know dose it leave abitter tast in my month
Best Answer:
Tekturna
Generic Name: aliskiren (a LIS ke rin)
Brand Names: Tekturna
Tekturna is an anti-hypertensive (blood pressure lowering) medication. It works by decreasing substances in the body that narrow blood vessels and raise blood pressure.
If you take Tekturna with meals, avoid high-fat foods. They can make it harder for your body to absorb this medication
Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink while taking Tekturna
Take this medication with a full glass of water.
You may take Tekturna with or without food, but take it the same way every time.
This way, it will avoid that bitterness taste in your mouth.

Can my husband and I have sex if I am using Endometrin (the progesterone suppository)?… by K
After TTC we are almost 4 weeks pregnant (counting from my ovulation). I am taking Endometrin 3 times a day. Does it matter if we have sex because of the Endometrin? We don't know if we should keep trying to hold out until I am not using it anymore.
Weird, I know… Hopefully someone has some insight though.
Best Answer:
I was using Crinone vaginal suppository one time a day (evenings) and was told by my doctor and read it in the instructions that sex would NOT interfere with the deliverance of the progesterone.
I haven't used Endometrin though. Does it say anything about it in the instruction packet? You could ask your doctor or the pharmacist for a better piece of mind.
Good luck!

What options for pain Medications are there during Labor?… by ???Mommy to be???IT'S A GI
This is my first baby, I wanted a natural birth.
But When I realized how big she was at my last ultrasound, and once I REALLY thought about it I'm going to use the drugs.
I'm not sure exactly what my options are for the different medications.
I am 32 weeks 3 days, I just want to make sure I'm ready for what is coming.
If anyone can help out a new Mommy to be that would be great.
Thanks
Best Answer:
I have a family nurse practitioner that comes and sees me every other week to talk about my pregnancy. She left me her Childbirth book last time she was here so I could start reading it. Here is a list of several different options you have for pain relief:
- (drug) Analgesics/Narcotics-
*Demerol can be given through IM or IV
*Nubain can be given through IM or IV
*Stadol can be given through IM or IV
*Sublimaze can be given through IM or IV
Generally only given during active labor.
Purpose of these: To take the edge off pain. To raise pain threshold. To reduce pain (central nervous system depressant)
-(drug) Tranquilizers
*Valium *Phenergan *Vistaril *Largon –Can all be given through IM or IV
Purpose is to reduce tension & anxiety. To relieve nausea. To relax muscles. To enhance effects of narcotics.
-(drug) Inhalation Anesthesia *Nitrous Oxide
Self-adminidtered (under supervision of OB/Midwife) You would be given a facemask or mouthpiece attatched to a gas mixture of nitrous oxide & oxygen. When in need of pain relief you would take in a deep breath.
Purpose is to take edge off the pain.
-(drug) Epidural
Given in active labor while sidelying or sitting. Needle introduced into epidural space (not spinal fluid) and catheter inserted. Catheter left in place for continuous administration or in case additional medicine is needed.
Purpose is to relieve painful sensation of contractions, birth, and episiotomy repair. To allow mom to be awake and alert.

What are your experiences with side effects from the prescription drug Fosamax?… by yankeelady19
I started taking fosamax 70mg weekly, about 5 wks. ago. I am now noticing bad muscle pain, stiffness in joints, esp. knees. Has anyone else taken this drug for osteoporosis, and what has been your experience with it? What were the side effects that you had?
Best Answer:
Fosamax is prescribed for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, the brittle bone disease, in postmenopausal women. It is also used to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis, and is prescribed for both men and women who have developed a form of osteoporosis sometimes caused by steroid medications such as prednisone. This drug can also be used to relieve Paget's disease of bone, a painful condition that weakens and deforms the bones.
Fosamax is effective only when each tablet or bottle of oral solution is taken with a full glass of plain water first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before the first food, beverage, or other medication. If you can wait longer before eating or drinking, Fosamax will be absorbed better. Do not lie down after taking Fosamax until at least 30 minutes have passed and you've had something to eat.
What measures does someone take if they were to go to live in a malaria risk area?… by Dave
I know if you go for a trip, you take antimalarial pills and put up with the side effects while you are there. What if someone intended to live there permanently? Do they have to take pills every day for the rest of their life?
Best Answer:
Malaria is infection with any of 4 species of Plasmodium. Symptoms are fever, which may be periodic, chills, sweating, hemolytic anemia, and splenomegaly. Diagnosis is by seeing Plasmodium in a peripheral blood smear. Treatment and prophylaxis depend on the species and drug sensitivity and include chloroquine, quinine, atovaquone and proguanil, mefloquine, doxycycline, and artemisinin derivatives. Patients infected with P. vivax and P. ovale also receive primaquine.
Most people living in malaria-prevalent areas have acquired some immunity to the disease. Visitors will not have immunity, and will need to take preventive medications. Even pregnant women should take preventive medications because the risk to the fetus from the medication is less than the risk of acquiring a congenital infection.
People on anti-malarial medications may still become infected. Avoid mosquito bites by wearing protective clothing over the arms and legs, using screens on windows, and using insect repellent.
Chloroquine has been the drug of choice for protection from malaria. With emerging resistance, it is now only indicated for use in areas where Plasmodium vivax, P. oval, and P. malariae are present. Falciparum malaria is becoming increasingly resistant to anti-malarial medications.
For travelers headed for areas Falciparum malaria is known to occur, there are several options for antimalarial treatment, including mefloquine, atovaquone/Proguanil, and doxycycline.
Travelers can call the CDC for information on types of malaria in a given geographical area, preventive drugs, and times of the season to avoid travel.
